Mississippi History
This wonderful book not only teaches you about quilts, it also teaches you about the state of Mississippi history. I learned facts I had not known. Such as, Mississippi was one of the five wealthiest states in the Union before the Civil War. And of course this was from the cotton plantations, which supplied the cotton to make quilts. A must read for anyone interested in antiquity of our state.

Mississippi Quilts by Mary Elizabeth Johnson
Collectors of state quilt books will not want to miss this important addition to their library.

Monster Cheese

Lots o' cheese = lots o' fun!
What a great book! The story is so much fun; this just has "bedtime story" written all over it. Kids will get a kick out of Sam's adventures and parents will enjoy going along for the ride. A must read!

Limburger Lunacy
With its gripping tale of cheese run amok, it does a great deal to hamper the image of dairy products. However, it does so in with ingenuity and originality that takes it beyond the level of run-of-the-mill child literature.

Movin'

Authors: Dave Johnson, Christopher Raschka, New York Public Library, and Chris Raschka

Inspiring
This book means a lot to me- I'm featured in it! Groups of teens from various libraries in NYC met once a week, learned a craft and got to express themselves freely. Movin' is our words and emotions for others to enjoy and be inspired by. I sincerely hope this moves other teens to pick up a pen and any scrap of paper and write!!!

A showcase of young writers
A wonderful anthology of poems by young writers. All of these poems are full of wonderful language and images. I especially enjoyed, "Shoes", "Day Deli Day" and "Ode to the Last 5 minutes of English" but it would be hard to choose a favorite poem. Created during poetry workshops at New York Public Library, it's hard to believe that most of these poems were written in the time span of 20 minutes. These young poets are full of promise and their poems should inspire other teens to express themselves through language.

Music Listening Today
Published in Paperback by Breton Pub Co (June, 1999)
Authors: Charles, Phd Hoofer, Mary Ray, Phd Johnson, and Charles R. Hoffer
Average review score:

Don't Miss It
Unquestionably the most understandable, interesting, even entertaining text for introduction to music courses. It would also be an excellent gift for anyone wanting to know more about classical, ethnic and contemporary music. The CD ROMs add immeasurably to the book, providing graphic illustrations of the ideas in the text. An outstanding book.

The world of music at your fingertips, with 2 CDs
This is a beautiful book. Anyone who wants to learn more about music -- its notation, its instrumentation, its history, how and why it moves us -- will enjoy this book immensely. It discusses music theory in understandable terms, covering rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics, timbre, and organization. The instruments of the classical orchestra are all explained, as are folk instruments. In fact, folk music from around the world is discussed as a prelude to the main sections on the so-called "art music" of Europe and America. I especially liked the Listening Guides. They correspond to tracks on the two CDs that come with the book. The author explains what's going on at each important part of a piece of music, with timings provided so you can follow along, and even provides musical notation showing important themes. I don't read music, but I enjoyed being able to see the score of a familiar strain and following along with the Listening Guide to better understand what the music was about. There are also biographies of each important composer and beautiful full-color reproductions of art from the period being discussed. The book also includes an appendix about musical notation (which if I had studied better would probably give me musical literacy). It also has a very useful glossary and index. This book is obviously a college textbook, but anyone who wants to increase his or her understanding and appreciation of the world music will benefit from reading it.

My Worst Friend

My worst friend
My Worst Friend by P.J Peterson is an excellent book for kids between the ages of 9-12 years of age.

Sara and Jennifer are worst enemies. They don't get a long anywhere, including school. All they do is insult each other by name calling. Jenny's teacher tells the news about Sara that she is in the hospital, with a tumor in her head. While Sara is sick in hospital Jenny visits her. Since Sara had lost her hair, Jenny did not even want to look at her head. The 6th grade class had made a banner which Sara thought it was a 2 minute project on the computer. When Jenny goes to school the next day she starts to lie about what Jenny said about the banners the 6th grade had made. But, still Sara has changed with her face all pale, but definatly not her attitude. When Sara comes back almost everyone wanted to feel her head, and one asked is it itches! I would recomend this book to anyone I know. It very well written, and funny.

This book tells and good story and leaves a good messsage.
P. J. Peterson's My Worst Friend is both written well and entertaining. In addition, it carries a message about what friendship is and the different ways in which friendship can be shown.

Sara and Jenny seem to be the opposite of friends. They constantly call each other names and insult each other, but when Sara becomes critically ill, Jenny shows what it means, not only to be a friend, but what it means to be a truly caring person. In doing so, she learns something about one thing a person with a life-threatening illness needs above all: to be treated as a normal person, not pitied as some poor little sick thing. The highlight of the book comes when Jenny and Sara find themselves as competitors even though Sara is still sick. How do you compete with someone who's ill without either running over her roughshod or offending her?

This book can provide an important way for youngsters to understand how their actions and words affect other people. It can also help them understand how to deal with someone who is different. Most of all, My Worst Friend is a good story, one that children 9 through 12 can relate to in their own lives.

Getting the dating thing right!
Well after making several bad choices in my dating life, I finally grew up. My sister sent this book to me. It really changed her life. This book then changed my life. The book teaches how to first enjoy being single. Then it teaches you to how to date God's way. The author covers issues like building a strong communication foundation, a foundation on prayer and incorporating GOD as the center of the relationship. Then she talks about how to date with the intention of marriage. The author speaks about the importance of listening to God's voice when choosing a lifelong partner. For God looks at the heart while man looks at the outer appearance. If you think you have dating standards, this book will challenge the validity of them. If you follow the advice and example of the author you will find marriage a desirable and an attainable goal.

Refreshing take on single christian life
I highly recommend this book. It is a breath of fresh air amoung the other singles books I have read. Dr. Cook helps you to explore yourself and she teaches you how you can be a better woman, so that God can bring your mate into your life. While most books focus on improving your looks, financial(all important!) she takes it further and talks about your attitude, expectations, and walk with Christ. When she talks about a behavior or attitude that is wrong she is not condemming but has an attitude of care. Because she was single (for a long time)and is now married, she explains why you should change, and how it can be done. If you want to improve your relationships and yourself. get this book.

GENTLE, INTEGRAL ADVICE FOR THE SAVED, SINGLE SISTER
This book, geared toward single Christian women who want a Christian husband, is a step by step plan that operates under a simple premise: in order to have a Christian, God-sent mate, you must believe in the Lord to send him to you, strictly follow God's scriptures/disciplines, live and conduct yourself in a godly manner and rely or prayer to guide you in the process. She isn't as light-hearted as Michelle Mckinney Hammond, but her maternal tone is just as warm and more effective in some cases. She offers prayers geared toward each affirmation and gives simple exercises as well. For those who are laboring undering the belief that you are doomed to stay single for life, you will take heart in recieving biblically supported advice from a MARRIED woman who has walked the walk, talked the talk and ended up with a loving, Christian husband in the end. I found the book to be an encouraging read and hope that others will find Dr. Cook's words and experiences just as beneficial.
